Hey,

I am in the process of designing an RTS style game and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on which type of model would be most beneficial to the efficiency of my overall system judging I am using Xith. I have seen there is a lot of support for different file types but I am unsure which one to use for my style of game.

Thanks,
William

Hey will,

how are you ?

So I think in a RTS you'd need animated models so I'd advise you Cal3D.
Why ?
  • Minimal storage needed (just the skeleton + keyframes)
  • Precomputation possible (already implemented, look at PrecomputedAnimatedModel classes) = Huge performance gain (especially with lots of units)
  • Blender3D export script available
  • I can provide support for this format and the loaders associated (I made Cal3DLoader and PrecomputedAnimatedLoader ; note : the Cal3D loader is actually based on Dave Lloyd's and theKman's work for Java3D and jME)

Now the problem is : where do you get your Cal3D models from?

Well do you have artists? If you don't, I "have some"  Grin (Some guys at MagicSpark.org like challenges and they do that pretty well ; see Stratagem screenshots on Xith.org -> Featured Projects)

Enjoy!

Hi Amos,

Sorry I haven't had chance to speak to you recently I have only just managed to sort things out at work. But am doing quite well and finally getting organised on the project.

Your offer seems very tempting, and we could definitely do with some artistic support.  There is currently a 2D designer who is doing some of the screen designs but no one who is really working on models. How do I go about gaining you and your teams support?

Well, MagicSpark.org is a french-speaking community but they are mostly fluent in english. So I submitted them a proposition about that, we'll get answers soon (between 30 minutes and 2 days of delay  Grin ).

By the way, would you get some use out of a forum board ? (So that you can coordinate your work with artists and all..)

You're using Xith on a commercial project? Cool Smiley. What is it about? Is there a website, that we can have alook at?

I don't think he is. I think he was talking about his work, THEN about his project.

Thanks for the response there Amos.

Amos, Thanks for the offer of a forum. It sounds like a good idea to coordinate design ideas with the designers. Let me know how they response to helping with the project.

Marvin, I'm guessing you have probably read the article already so you'd realise its not a commercial project. As for websites, we have not published anything important online yet but we're getting there. There are a few docs on sourceforge if you are interested in reading a bit about it.

You're welcome.

Do a subsection on the MagicSpark.org forum is OK for you ? Note that the interface can be switched from French to English (otherwise the solution wouldn't be even viable). If you prefer we can set up a different forum (even a small site, if you want).

Let me know how they response to helping with the project.
First reaction from "Sylvain" : "Why don't we simply merge the two projects.. with two different skins, if needed?" (approaching from what I told you  Grin )

A subsection on the MagicSpark.org forum should be fine. I don't really think there is a need to setup anything that special.
