I have added a new CullMode to PolygonAttributes (SWITCH), that enables you to properly render a volume-shape like a Sphere in semi-transparent. This CullMode makes the renderer render the shape twice. Once with back face culling and once with front face culling.

There's a new test case, that demonstrates it (org.xith3d.test.render.TransparentSphereTest).
