Before I search for a model of the Earth, does anybody have one (or a link to one) in a Xith3D-compatible format?  I need a decently detailed one so that I can zoom in, but it obviously doesn't need to be detailed like Google Earth or anything like that.  One that supports LoD would be even better.

Hi I made a series of classes that creates a bumped sphere object from a topography bump map, it will create it at any detail level... and also creates texture coordinates using the Lightwave tequnique.
I made it using J3D so will probably need some modification... but not alot (and will be a little dirty coding wise)
If you want them reply and i'll sort emailing them to you.

At some point, that would be great.  Right now, I'm looking for a data source that works with one of the standard Xith3D importers.  I know we have some bump mapping which is probably sufficient for my needs.  In fact, I could probably wrap a picture of the earth onto a sphere if I can find a panoramic image that was produced by the right projection algorithm.

Do you know the earth.jpg in the xith-tk test-resources/textures folder? I got it from the "Planetary Textures" link on this gimp links page. There you can also download a bumpmap/cloudmap/etc of the earth an all of the other planets and some moons of our solar system all in different (good to extreme) quality versions.

Unfortunately the page seems to be dead. But fortunately I once downloaded all of the 1024x512 versions. If you're interested, I could send them to you.

Doh! I forgot about that.  Would it be useful to keep them all in the test-resources/textures folder for everyone's benefit?  I'm thinking I may not be the only one who could use things such as this.

Well, all of them would mean additional 70 MB of download size. So, I would not want them to be there. But I could at least add the earth's bumpmap. I will mail it to you for now, since I currently donT' want to commit anything to xith, since I have a bunch of new files to commit and don't want to accidently commit parts of it now and avoid confusion of my self Tongue.
